19 Oct 2023
  • What is the latest news about the Lamborghini electric car?
  • What is the future of hybrid technology at Lamborghini?
  • What is the future of Lamborghini off-road sports cars?

Lamborghini revealed the all-electric vehicle just a few months back in Pebble Beach and shocked the world. Today, at the Qatar Geneva Motor Show, we sat down with Stephan Winkelmann the CEO of Lamborghini to learn more about this masterpiece that will change Lamborghini forever as well as what about the future and current lineup of the Italian bull.

The electric Lamborghini launch date

The electric Lamborghini launch date

Nabil: We have seen the UK pushing the date for discontinuing the combustion engine production until 2035 and Europe also easing the EURO 7 restrictions, and you’re talking about a Full EV Lambo coming in 2028. Will these changes affect the deadline to produce the Lambo EV, the reason I am asking is because it’s a big step for Lamborghini's image and a major step in the EV industry?

Stephan: First of all, the UK is moving from 30 to 35 so they are now on the same deadline as the EU, so there is no difference between the EU and the UK anymore. On top of that, we have an extension to 2036 as a small manufacturer.

The second point is EU7 you’re right, but EU7 was for the big manufacturers in 2025 and now it has moved to 2027, for us it was always 2030 and it stays on 2030, so there are no changes in terms of regulations which will affect Lamborghini, and when we develop a car it takes 4 to 5 years before launching it in the market with a life cycle of 8 to 9 years, so we have to know exactly what is happening in 12 years from now.

The strategy is to produce a daily usable car like this one, which is a 2+2, or follow the URUS path which is coming after this one, and at the same time be fully electric and stay with the super sports cars category. There’s always the use of hybrid engines, and there is an opportunity for synthetic fuel. So all this is something we don’t need to decide now we have a window of 3 to 4 years to decide not because of the regulations but because hybrids are new today so it takes a bit of time to be renewed thus we can wait and think and observe the market.

The future of hybrid technology at Lamborghini

The future of hybrid technology at Lamborghini

Nabil: So, 2028 is set for this car the Lanzador. You spoke about hybrid engine technology and now we see it on a V12 hybrid technology, will there be a V8 hybrid technology, will you be rolling that kind of technology on different models on Lambo or just on the Revuelto?

Stephan: We will have the Urus as a V8 hybrid this will be the next car that is coming as a Plug-in Hybrid, the idea for Lamborghini is that whatever we produce, it has to be more performing than the previous generation, The Revuelto is a high-performance electric hybrid vehicle, so it is using less emissions but is also much more performing than the Aventador. This combination is valid and very positive for our brand and it will also be our strategy.

Nabil: In hybrid technology, we have seen other manufacturers go on V6 hybrid, is Lamborghini going in that direction or not?

Stephan: We are not planning a V6.

Lamborghini off-road sports cars

Nabil: For the off-road concept, I know you are sold out on the Huracan Sterato, but who is your target audience and is there any plan to produce anything in the line of off-road on supercars not SUVs?

Stephan: The Sterato is an exercise which was planned a long time ago, we always postponed, and we finally did it last year and I think it was the right decision. It's not only good for gravel but it’s also very cool in the city, because it’s a car with a bit higher seating position more comfortable than your usual super sports cars, so it is really a lifestyle car and I have to say that new customers are coming because of that and that is one of the things which is interesting, but for sure also all Lamborghini clients were very much interested. We had all the cars sold in a couple of weeks and we won’t do more.

Nabil: Are you planning to do more?

Stephan: No that’s it, we might see in the future but it’s too early to talk about it.

Nabil: We were together in the Urus Performante in Rome. That car is magnificent from a performance perspective you mentioned that there is a V8 Hybrid coming on the new Urus, Is it a new Urus?

Stephan: It's a facelift with a plug-in hybrid so it’s not a major change and has the same platform but wait and see.

Nabil: So is there anything being planned in the line Purosangue or in that sense less than SUV more than a sports car?

Stephan: We have our own DNA and we will stick to it.
