Morgan Motor Company, renowned for its classic yet innovative automotive creations, has taken a bold step into the electric vehicle (EV) realm with the introduction of the Morgan XP-1. This experimental prototype is not just a mere adaptation of an existing model; it represents Morgan's first foray into in-house powertrain development, boasting an all-electric heart that promises an exhilarating and eco-friendly driving experience.

Derived from the Ford-powered Super 3, the Morgan XP-1 has undergone a significant transformation, shedding its traditional combustion engine for a cutting-edge electric motor. The 134-horsepower (100-kilowatt) electric motor is ingeniously placed in the existing transmission tunnel, providing power to a single rear wheel. This strategic placement not only maximizes performance but also contributes to a seamless integration of electric power into the classic design. The XP-1 features a compact 33-kilowatt-hour battery pack ingeniously mounted under the hood, where the conventional gasoline engine once resided. Despite its modest size, this battery pack offers a commendable range of approximately 241 kilometers on a single charge. Morgan's engineers have successfully balanced performance and efficiency, ensuring that the XP-1 remains a practical and viable electric vehicle for everyday use.

Lightweight Design

Weighing in at a mere 1,543 pounds (700 kilograms), the Morgan XP-1 manages to retain the lightweight charm that has long been associated with the brand. Surprisingly, it is only 132 pounds (60 kilograms) heavier than its gas-powered counterpart, showcasing the efficiency of Morgan's engineering in adapting to electric propulsion without compromising on the essence of driving pleasure.

To further enhance the XP-1's efficiency, Morgan's engineering team has implemented aerodynamic improvements. The drag coefficient has been significantly reduced from 0.65 to 0.42 through meticulous adjustments to the underbody, wheels, and front fascia. This reduction in drag coefficient by a third not only enhances the vehicle's overall efficiency but also contributes to its distinctive aesthetic appeal.

The Morgan XP-1 stands as a testament to the brand's commitment to innovation and sustainability. By embracing electric power and seamlessly integrating it into the iconic Super 3 chassis, Morgan has created an experimental prototype that not only pays homage to its rich heritage but also sets the stage for a greener automotive future. With a lightweight design, efficient battery system, and aerodynamic enhancements, the XP-1 showcases Morgan's ability to embrace change while staying true to the essence of driving pleasure. As electric mobility continues to shape the automotive landscape, the Morgan XP-1 emerges as a captivating blend of tradition and forward-thinking technology.

Porsche plans a trio of powertrains for the Cayenne into the next decade

For more than 20 years, the Cayenne has been characterised by its ability to provide the broad range of qualities between characteristic Porsche driving performance, excellent comfort in everyday driving, and great capability when driving off-road. The future models of the SUV will seamlessly continue this success story, retaining all of the car’s familiar features.

“The Cayenne has always defined the sports car in its segment. In the middle of the decade, the fourth generation will set standards in the segment as an electric SUV,” said Blume, CEO of Porsche AG. At the same time, into the next decade our customers will still be able to choose from a wide range of powerful and efficient combustion and hybrid models.

"The third generation of the Cayenne will be further upgraded and will continue to be offered alongside the fourth, all-electric generation".

The current Cayenne generation, which last year was given one of the most extensive product upgrades in the history of Porsche, will be further developed with major technological investment in the future. Here the developers will be focusing, among other things, on the powertrains, in particular on improving the efficiency of the V8 developed by Porsche and built at the Zuffenhausen engine plant. Extensive technical measures will ensure that the twin-turbo engine is ready to comply with future legislative requirements.
