Ultimate Guide to Engine Oil in the UAE: What Every Driver Needs to Know

24 Sep 2025
  • What kind of oil should I use in the UAE?
  • How often should I change my oil in the UAE?
  • What oil brands are best in the UAE?

Hot weather, dusty roads, and slow traffic are part of everyday driving in the UAE. These harsh conditions can destroy your engine if you are not using the right oil. Whether you are cruising through Dubai’s highways or stuck in Sharjah’s rush hour, your engine needs high performance oil that can take the heat. Here is everything men need to know to protect their engines and extend their car’s life.

Choosing the Right Oil for UAE Heat

Choosing the Right Oil for UAE Heat

Not all engine oils are made equal, especially when dealing with the UAE’s scorching summer. The three most common types you will find in service centers across the Emirates are conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic. While conventional oil might work in older cars or light duty use, it tends to break down quickly in high heat.

Full synthetic oil is your best bet in this region. It is made to resist breakdown under extreme heat, reduce wear, and last longer between oil changes. For high mileage cars that have passed the 150,000 kilometer mark, high mileage synthetic oil helps reduce leaks and oil burning. When in doubt, always check the owner’s manual for manufacturer approved oil types.

Popular viscosity grades in the UAE include 5W40 and 10W40. These give you a smooth start in mild winter and solid protection during peak summer. If you drive long distances or off road in the desert, switching to a heavier grade like 15W40 or 15W50 can offer more durability.

Oil does not last forever, and in the UAE, it breaks down faster than in cooler climates. Most drivers will need to change conventional oil every 5000 kilometers or every 3 to 4 months. If you are using a synthetic blend, expect to go 7000 to 10000 kilometers between changes. Full synthetic oil is the most durable, often lasting up to 15000 kilometers or nearly a year.

However, UAE roads are not easy on engines. If you drive in stop and go traffic, spend time in the desert, or leave your car idling under the sun, you may want to check oil levels more frequently. Filters also need replacing more often due to sand and dust exposure.

Expect to pay between 150 to 400 AED for a standard oil change depending on your vehicle type and the oil used. If you drive a luxury car or use high end full synthetic oil, you will likely be on the higher end of that range.

When it comes to protecting your car, not all brands are built the same. Globally recognized brands like Mobil 1, Castrol EDGE, Shell Helix Ultra, Motul 300V, and Total Quartz 9000 are known for their performance in high heat environments like the UAE.

Locally, ENOC oils are a favorite among drivers for being easy to find and reliable in desert conditions. Other regional brands like ADNOC and Emarat are designed to match the Gulf’s weather profile and are trusted in many service centers.

Always make sure that the oil you choose meets OEM requirements listed in your car manual. Look for ratings like API SP for petrol engines or ACEA A3/B4 for European models.
