Many drivers across Saudi Arabia and the Arab world still treat the parking brake as optional, something used only on steep hills. A viral mechanic video shared on TikTok is challenging that belief, warning that skipping the parking brake can slowly damage the transmission itself. What seems like a harmless shortcut may turn into a costly repair, especially for drivers who park daily without engaging the brake.
Mechanics explain that the parking brake does more than stop the car from rolling. It reduces mechanical stress inside the transmission. When a driver shifts into Park without engaging the parking brake, the entire weight of the vehicle rests on a small internal part called the parking pawl. Over time, constant pressure can wear it down or even cause it to fail. Repairs at that point are expensive and avoidable. Engaging the parking brake first spreads the load away from the transmission and helps extend its lifespan, whether the car is automatic or manual.
Driving instructors and technicians agree on a simple routine. Stop the vehicle while pressing the brake pedal, engage the parking brake, then shift the transmission into Park. This order prevents sudden movement once the foot leaves the pedal and protects internal components. Ignoring the parking brake for long periods can also cause the brake cable itself to seize or rust, leading to additional repairs. As many mechanics say online, the transmission should never be the only thing holding a car in place.
