Public transport is getting cheaper, roads are getting busier, and many drivers are choosing to leave their cars parked for weeks or even months. But if you think driving less means fewer problems, think again. Just because your car sits still doesn’t mean it stays healthy. From battery drainage to oil degradation and even tire damage, lack of use can silently wear your car down. This article breaks down what can go wrong and how to prevent it.
Letting your car sit for too long without care can quietly turn into a costly problem. When oil sits in the engine without circulating, it breaks down and becomes thick and contaminated. Moisture can also build up inside, especially if the engine is only run on short trips that never let it fully heat up. This leads to sludge formation that threatens the engine’s internal parts.
Meanwhile, the battery suffers from lack of movement. Infrequent drives mean it doesn’t get fully charged, and over time, it can lose its ability to start the car at all. Brake fluid also absorbs moisture, reducing braking performance and increasing stopping distances. And under the car, hidden rust begins forming on the exhaust and brake systems due to humidity, especially in coastal areas.
Even if you’re not driving much, a few simple habits can go a long way. First, take your car out for a proper 30-minute drive every two weeks. That gets the engine hot enough to burn off moisture, recharges the battery, and keeps the tires rolling.
Always park in a shaded or covered space to protect the paint and interior from sun damage. If indoor parking isn’t possible, invest in a quality car cover. Washing the car regularly also helps remove salt, dust, and grime that can lead to rust.
Finally, stick to your car’s maintenance schedule. Check the battery, top off fluids, and monitor tire pressure. Even if it’s just sitting, your car still needs attention to stay road-ready.
