GMC's smallest SUV, the Terrain, has been a staple in the company’s lineup since its introduction in 2018. Despite its quiet presence and relatively unchanged mechanical setup, the Terrain has managed to become GMC’s most popular SUV through the first half of this year. For 2025, the Terrain gets a significant makeover, combining fresh styling and cutting-edge technology with the familiar performance features that have kept it in the game.

Significant Exterior Updates

Significant Exterior Updates

At a glance, the 2025 GMC Terrain may look similar to its predecessor, but a closer inspection reveals several notable changes. The most striking difference is the updated exterior styling, particularly at the front. The new model features a more prominent rectangular grille, which sits above a fascia with sharper edges and a more aggressive look. This gives the Terrain a more modern and commanding presence on the road.

The C-shaped LED running lights remain a signature feature, but the beltline at the C-pillar now adopts a forward slant, reminiscent of the Chevrolet Equinox. This design change contributes to a sleeker profile. The rear of the SUV also sports more angular lines, with a lower fascia incorporating vertically oriented reflectors. The smaller C-shaped taillights and enlarged rear quarter windows enhance visibility and contribute to a more cohesive design. Additionally, a new two-tone roof option adds a touch of customization, accentuated by the floating roof motif created by the redesigned C-pillar.

Interior Tech Takes Center Stage

Interior Tech Takes Center Stage

Inside the 2025 Terrain, the updates are far more dramatic. GMC has introduced a 15-inch portrait-oriented digital screen that dominates the center of the dash, providing a central hub for infotainment and vehicle controls. This is complemented by an 11-inch digital instrument display, creating a futuristic cockpit that enhances the driving experience.

These digital displays are standard across the Terrain lineup, highlighting the significant tech upgrades for the 2025 model. The SUV now boasts 15 driver-assist systems, including advanced features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. Google Assistant integration adds a layer of convenience, allowing drivers to control various functions using voice commands. Optional features include a power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, 5G hotspot connectivity, and an impressive array of eight exterior cameras for enhanced safety and visibility.

Reliable Performance

Reliable Performance

Mechanically, the 2025 Terrain retains its tried-and-true turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. While the engine remains unchanged, it’s now paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, promising smoother shifts and improved fuel efficiency. At launch, all-wheel drive is standard, but GMC plans to introduce a front-wheel-drive model later.

Despite these updates, some details about the 2025 Terrain remain under wraps. While the new design suggests the SUV may be taller and wider, GMC hasn’t released specific dimensions or information about any potential changes to the chassis. The entry-level Elevation trim will be the first to reach dealerships in late 2024, replacing the SLE and SLT trims. In 2026, the AT4 and Denali trims will join the lineup, offering more luxury, features, and off-road capabilities, particularly in the AT4 model.

As GMC continues to refine and expand its SUV offerings, the 2025 Terrain represents a significant step forward in both design and technology. While it may not offer a radically new engine or platform, its blend of updated styling, advanced tech features, and reliable performance is likely to keep it a strong contender in the competitive compact SUV market.
