Mazda Unveils the Arata: A Bold Step in Electric SUV Territory

29 Apr 2024
  • What innovative design features and strategic market approach distinguish Mazda's Arata in the evolving landscape of electric SUVs?

Mazda is back on the electrification stage, this time with a striking new concept—an electric SUV named the Arata. Unveiled at Auto China 2024 in Beijing, this model marks Mazda's determined push into the rapidly evolving world of electric vehicles (EVs). While the MX-30 may not have hit the mark, Mazda is not backing down, showcasing the Arata alongside their rear-wheel-drive electric 6 sedan.

Developed by Changan Mazda, a joint venture combining the strengths of Changan Automobile and Mazda, the Arata is set to challenge perceptions of what an electric SUV can be. Although still a concept, Mazda has confirmed plans for production by the end of next year, aiming to inject a fresh, forward-looking design into the market.

Redefining Electric SUV Excellence

Redefining Electric SUV Excellence

The Arata's name, derived from Japanese for "new" or "fresh," encapsulates Mazda's approach to this model. It's more than just a name; it's a statement of intent. The design, likely to be refined further for production, demonstrates Mazda's commitment to modern aesthetics and premium quality.

Unlike the current MX-30, the Arata is exclusively electric. This underscores Mazda's belief in the future of electric mobility, aligning with the broader industry shift towards sustainable transportation solutions. Moreover, the SUV is expected to adopt Mazda's Kodo design language, ensuring a sleek and dynamic appearance that sets it apart in the crowded SUV segment.

Key features of the Arata concept include a minimalistic approach with sleek lights, an illuminated grille, and innovative touches like cameras replacing conventional mirrors. The absence of door handles and a rear wiper adds to the streamlined design. Mazda's attention to detail is evident in the illuminated "Mazda" script along the sides, adding a touch of sophistication.

While details about the production version remain somewhat speculative, Mazda has trademarked the potential name "EZ-60" for the Arata. This signals a shift towards alphanumeric designations, reflecting Mazda's broader brand strategy.

Mazda's ambitions with the Arata extend beyond aesthetics. By targeting a higher-end market, Mazda aims to justify a potentially higher price point, emphasizing quality and innovation. The decision to manufacture the sedan and SUV in China underlines Mazda's strategic focus on the Asian market, where demand for electric vehicles is rapidly growing.

As the automotive industry continues its electrification revolution, Mazda's Arata signifies a bold step towards a sustainable future. With a unique blend of Japanese craftsmanship and modern design, the Arata promises to be a compelling option for consumers seeking innovation and style in the electric SUV segment. Keep an eye out for Mazda's next chapter in electrification as they redefine the boundaries of automotive excellence.

Latest project from CALLUM to make global public debut at Concours on Savile Row

CALLUM SKYE, the first own brand vehicle fully developed in-house by the British design and engineering business CALLUM, will be seen in public for the first time at Concours on Savile Row, London on 22-23 May 2024.

The pioneering, high-performance, all-wheel-drive, multi-terrain electric vehicle was announced in November 2023 to global critical acclaim. The first running prototype will be displayed outside Edward Sexton’s store throughout the free-to-attend event that celebrates the long history that car manufacturers and tailors share.

Engineered to offer an exhilarating and rewarding driving experience both on- and off-road, SKYE has been crafted to ensure the utmost capability, refinement and beauty for discerning adventurers. As an all-electric vehicle, it’s powered by a 42kWh battery with anticipated range of 170 miles, with the option to specify an ultra-fast charging battery for full charge in under ten minutes. Measuring 4,047mm in length and 1,900mm in width, and weighing just 1,150kg, it boasts sportscar performance with 0-60mph achieved in under four seconds.

“The CALLUM SKYE is bold, beautifully engineered and crafted with refinement and craftsmanship. The same can be said for the world-leading bespoke tailoring that exists on Savile Row. We can’t wait to see and hear the reactions of event visitors who will be the first to see SKYE in person,” says David Fairbairn, managing director, CALLUM. “Compact, capable and extremely beautiful, we’re confident that this representation of the SKYE exterior will turn heads, as we invite those interested in commissioning a CALLUM SKYE to reserve their build slot.”
