Mercedes-Benz and Google Cloud today announced the expansion of their strategic partnership to introduce new generative AI (gen AI)-)-enabled in-car conversational search and navigation experiences for Mercedes-Benz owners. Mercedes-Benz is one of the first automakers to build an enhanced gen AI assistant using Google Cloud’s new Automotive AI Agent. The agent is custom-tuned for the automotive industry with Gemini on Vertex AI, and Google Maps’ detailed information about places. With this gen AI-enhanced experience, Mercedes-Benz is transforming point-of-interest (POI) search requests with more detailed and personalized conversational responses.
Today, Mercedes-Benz drivers can search for their favorite destinations via the MBUX Voice Assistant. Using Google Cloud’s new Automotive AI Agent and Google Maps’ extensive information about 250 million places around the world, Mercedes-Benz is now adding an exciting new dimension to the MBUX Virtual Assistant, which will be introduced with the new CLA series. It enables users to engage in natural conversations with their cars to effortlessly discover destinations and personalize their journeys. With the new functionality, users will be able to search for locations via voice like never before.
For example, the user can say: “I’m looking for a great Italian or Greek restaurant to take my family for a special birthday dinner.” After the system responds, the user can add follow-up questions, such as: “Does it have any famous dishes?” or “What are the customer reviews like?” To maximize functionality, the MBUX Virtual Assistant retains the conversation in its memory for up to one hour, so the user can go back to it later. This extra layer of intelligence can be used for any location-search request, such as a hotel, museum, sports stadium, art gallery, or shopping center.
The user can also refine their searches using multi-turn dialogues to find the most relevant destination. This means that they can ask if there’s a dog-friendly coffee shop on the way to the museum they plan to visit later in the day. Or they could find out if there’s a recommended florist close to a friend’s house. If no data is available for a particular search request, the MBUX Virtual Assistant can use the web data to initiate a phone call to gather more information.
“At Mercedes-Benz, we seek to offer our customers an exceptional digital experience. Our partnership with Google will further enhance in-car navigation, combining sophisticated location data with generative AI. Launching with the new CLA, our next-gen navigation will allow drivers and passengers to use voice commands to obtain comprehensive and personalized information within seconds.”
- Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz Group AG
[FOR JASON REVIEW] “Our partnership with Mercedes-Benz underscores Google Cloud’s commitment to driving innovation in the automotive industry. By combining Mercedes-Benz’s renowned automotive expertise with our cutting-edge generative AI, our new Automotive AI Agent will deliver a transformative and personalized driving experience, redefining what’s possible for Mercedes-Benz customers.”
- Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet
Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent, announced today, enables automakers to leverage the power of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to build and deploy customized, first-party voice assistant experiences with state-of-the-art AI quality and robustness. Automotive AI Agent was built using Google’s Gemini foundation models as its core, which enables multimodal reasoning capabilities through natural language speech interactions combined with navigation and search.
The new AI-enhanced POI search and navigation feature will be launched on the new Mercedes-Benz CLA later this year. The new CLA will be the first model designed with the new Mercedes-Benz operating system MB.OS. A rollout to further models with the MBUX Voice Assistant is also planned.
