Nissan Xterra Concept Returns with V8 Power and a Manual Gearbox

28 Oct 2025
  • What engine and transmission does the Nissan Xterra Concept 2025 offer?
  • How is the Nissan Xterra Concept 2025 different from the older model?

The Nissan Xterra is back, and it's bolder than ever. After nearly a decade of silence, Nissan has revived its off road legend with a concept that mixes retro vibes and modern power. Dubbed the Nissan Xterra Concept Revival, this new version reimagines the classic SUV formula with a muscular look, a V8 engine, and the return of a rare gem in today’s market, a manual transmission. It’s a tribute to rugged exploration and mechanical simplicity, just in time for a comeback at SEMA 2025.

At the heart of the new concept sits Nissan’s VK56 5.6 liter V8 engine, a proven powerhouse known for its raw torque and unmistakable sound. Unlike most modern SUVs that rely on automatic gearboxes, this concept pairs the V8 with a six speed manual transmission, putting full control back in the driver’s hands.

This combination is designed for those who miss the feel of real driving. It's not about smooth commutes, it's about hearing the engine growl as you shift through dirt trails and rocky climbs. It’s a throwback to when SUVs were built for adventure, not just comfort.

The Xterra Concept doesn’t just revive the name, it brings back the spirit of the original with a bold twist. The body draws inspiration from the first generation Xterra, but adds components from the latest Nissan Frontier. That includes the front grille, headlights, fenders, and even a carbon fiber hood with roof mounted LED lights.

The interior is also reimagined, borrowing Frontier’s modern dash layout, infotainment system, and door panels. Buyers can expect two seat and three row versions, catering to solo explorers and families alike.

Exterior details like larger off road tires, roof racks, steel bumpers, and spare tire mounts add to the aggressive look. Underneath, updated suspension helps it tackle rough terrain. It’s a proper blend of old and new, and it shows that Nissan is serious about bringing adventure back.

Yes, Nissan plans to launch a new SUV inspired by this concept in 2027. While the concept uses a V8, the production version will likely switch to a more practical hybrid V6 setup, making it more accessible in markets still reliant on fuel engines.

What makes this project special is how it combines elements from the Xterra (2005–2015), Pathfinder (2005–2012), and Frontier (2022–present). The result is not just a nostalgia trip, but a vision of what a true off road SUV should be in the future.
