Travis Pastrana Unleashes the Out of Control Subaru Brataroo at SEMA 2025

  • What are the specs of the 2.0 liter boxer engine in the Subaru Brataroo?
  • How did carbon fiber shape the exterior of the Brataroo?
  • What original elements from the classic Subaru Brat remain in the Brataroo?

SEMA 2025 in Las Vegas just got wilder with the reveal of the Subaru Brataroo, a project by rally legend Travis Pastrana and Vermont SportsCar. This beast is not just a show car, it is a 9500 rpm turbocharged monster built for Gymkhana stunts and extreme action. With its all carbon fiber body and throwback interior details, the Brataroo sets a new benchmark for wild builds, blending classic Subaru spirit with outlandish new tech and power.

Boxer Power Unleashed

Under the hood, the Brataroo runs a handmade 2.0 liter boxer engine developed by Vermont SportsCar. The motor pumps out 670 horsepower and 922 Newton meters of torque (680 lb ft), and screams all the way to 9500 rpm thanks to a massive turbo setup. While Subaru fans might wonder if it is based on the legendary EJ or FA series, the real story is the power delivery. The engine is paired to a Sadev transmission, the same kind you find in World Rally Championship cars, sending all that energy to four wheels. That means next level acceleration and cornering, just the way Gymkhana fans like it.

Carbon Fiber Body and Aero

The entire body of the Brataroo is made from lightweight carbon fiber, giving the car a perfect strength to weight ratio. But it is not just about saving kilos, it is about active aerodynamics. The front wheel arches feature moving blades that adjust for perfect balance during jumps. In the back, you can swap between a massive wing for max downforce or a smaller one built for tire shredding, as Pastrana jokes. The wild body lines come courtesy of designer Khyzyl Saleem (The Kyza), who mixed sci fi style with classic rally flavor.

Retro Meets Racing Inside

Step inside and you will see a unique blend of old school and cutting edge. The team restored the original radio and air conditioning unit from a classic Subaru Brat, but with a twist—the AC controls now operate the car’s active aero system. The radio and CB unit are just for vintage flair, while the rest of the cockpit is pure race spec. There is a full roll cage and custom racing seats built for the abuse of jumps, spins, and drifts Gymkhana is famous for.

Travis Pastrana says it best: the Brataroo is pure Subaru spirit, pushed to limits no Gymkhana car has ever reached before. This is not just a custom build, it is a platform designed to test the extremes of aerodynamic and mechanical grip, engineered to survive wild jumps and endless slides without losing balance or power.
